BEIJING, El Sky News — The three astronauts of China’s Shenzhou‑20 mission—Chen Dong, Chen Zhongrui, and Wang Jie—have been aboard the Tiangong space station since April 2025, completing a planned six‑month mission. Their return to Earth, initially scheduled for early November 2025, has been postponed after their return capsule was suspected to have been struck by orbital debris.
Chinese space authorities confirmed that the crew remains in good condition, carrying out their daily work and living routines normally. Emergency measures and risk assessments are currently underway to ensure the capsule is safe for re-entry.
Meanwhile, the Tiangong space station continues to operate normally, supporting both the Shenzhou‑20 crew and the newly arrived Shenzhou‑21 mission, which docked at the station to overlap with the returning astronauts.
The delay highlights the increasing risks posed by space debris to human spaceflight, while China’s human spaceflight program continues its preparations for future missions, including ambitions for a crewed lunar flight by 2030.
