Heavy Rain Claims Lives: At Least 10 Gaza Refugees Die Within 24 Hours

GAZA, El Sky News – The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is reported to be worsening as non-stop heavy rain since yesterday has claimed at least 10 lives, the majority consisting of children and the elderly sheltering in temporary displacement camps.

The latest data from local health authorities reveals a drastic increase in the death toll within this 24-hour period, sounding a harsh warning to the international community about the deepening crisis.

Limited Shelter, Increasing Disease Risk

Thousands of refugee families, who were previously displaced by conflict, are now facing a new disaster. Those forced to shelter in dilapidated tents and temporary structures are found to have insufficient protection against the ongoing winter season and storm.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the heavy rain, followed by extremely cold temperatures, compromised clean water supply, and inadequate sanitation, have placed the population at high risk.

“The crowded and wet conditions in the tents not only threaten the lives of victims trapped in flash floods but also increase the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks and acute respiratory infections,” explained a spokesperson for a field aid agency.

The deaths of the 10 latest victims have been confirmed as a direct result of hypothermia, drowning, and the failure of protective structures that could not withstand the water pressure.

Emergency Humanitarian Appeal

The humanitarian aid community is now appealing for emergency assistance, especially winterization supplies such as waterproof tarps, thick blankets, and warm clothing, to be immediately channeled to the affected areas.

“We need immediate action. Every hour that passes in this weather is a direct threat to the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza who are trapped in inhumane conditions,” asserted an activist.

The situation in Gaza is now not only about conflict but also a struggle for survival against a natural disaster exacerbated by destroyed infrastructure and a lack of resources.
