TORNADO SWEEPS THROUGH ANCOL, NORTH JAKARTA – MINOR DAMAGE REPORTED

JAKARTA, El Sky News – A tornado was reported to have swept through the popular Ancol recreation area in North Jakarta yesterday, Friday (12/12/2025), in the afternoon, causing panic among visitors and local residents. Although no casualties were reported, the extreme weather incident resulted in minor damage to several infrastructure and public facilities in the area.

According to initial reports from local authorities, the natural phenomenon occurred suddenly, accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds. It lasted only a short period, but was sufficient to tear off several roof tiles, break tree branches, and damage signboards and temporary stalls.

Cause of Panic and Immediate Action

The incident, which is rare with such intensity in the capital city, immediately triggered panic. Eyewitnesses reported that visitors had to run for cover in nearby concrete buildings while the recreation park staff immediately acted to evacuate people to safer areas.

Immediately after the incident, North Jakarta’s emergency response teams, including the Fire and Rescue Department and the district disaster management agency, were deployed to the location to conduct damage assessment and commence immediate cleanup operations.

“Our priority is to ensure that no victims are trapped and all areas are declared safe,” said a spokesperson for the Jakarta Governor’s Office in a brief statement this morning. “A detailed assessment is currently underway to calculate losses and fully restore services in the Ancol recreation area as soon as possible.”

Extreme Weather Warning

The Ancol incident also reinforces the warnings previously issued by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding the potential increase in extreme weather events, including tornadoes and thunderstorms, towards the end of the year and the beginning of the monsoon season.

Authorities urge the public, especially those living in or visiting coastal and open areas, to remain aware of the latest weather information and take appropriate precautions. The Ancol incident serves as an important reminder of the threat of climate change and public preparedness in facing natural disasters.
