Fatal Collision in Andalusia: Death Toll Rises to 42 as Spain Probes Broken Rail

CORDOBA, El Sky News – Authorities in Spain have confirmed that the death toll from the catastrophic train collision in Andalusia has reached 42, following the recovery of more victims from the wreckage. The incident, which occurred late Sunday evening near the town of Adamuz, has sent shockwaves across Europe and prompted a nationwide period of mourning.

The tragedy unfolded at approximately 7:39 PM local time on January 18, involving a high-speed Iryo train traveling from Malaga to Madrid and a Renfe Alvia service heading to Huelva.

The Mechanics of the Disaster Preliminary reports from the Spanish Ministry of Transport indicate that the Iryo train derailed while navigating a straight section of the track. The force of the derailment caused several rear carriages to swing into the adjacent path of the oncoming Renfe service. The resulting “T-bone” collision was so violent that multiple cars were launched off a four-meter embankment, scattering debris hundreds of meters across the rural landscape.

Ongoing Investigation As of Wednesday, January 21, investigators are focusing on a suspected structural failure in the infrastructure.

  • The “Broken Joint” Theory: Early forensic analysis of the tracks revealed a fractured rail joint. Experts believe the gap may have widened under the weight of the high-speed transit, triggering the initial derailment.
  • Maintenance History: The incident has sparked controversy as the section of the track had undergone significant renovation as recently as May 2025.
  • Worker Warnings: Railway unions have alleged that safety concerns regarding “vibrations” on this specific stretch had been flagged late last year, though official confirmation of these warnings is pending.

National Response Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast on all public buildings. “The pain of the families is the pain of all of Spain,” Sánchez stated during his visit to a local hospital where 120 passengers are being treated, dozens of whom remain in critical condition.

Recovery teams continue to operate heavy machinery at the site to clear the twisted steel, while the “black box” data recorders from both locomotives have been recovered for further analysis by the Civil Guard.
