KUALA LUMPUR – A devastating fire claimed the lives of an elderly woman and her young granddaughter in the early hours of Monday morning after they were trapped in their home at Kampung Pulau Penampang.
The victims, identified as an 80-year-old woman and her 14-year-old granddaughter, were discovered by firefighters among the charred remains of the house. Four other family members who were in the residence at the time managed to escape the blaze.
According to Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Ordine Gilu, the department received an emergency call at 5:22 AM. A team of 20 personnel was immediately dispatched to the scene, located about 14 kilometers from the station.
“The fire involved a permanent house structure which was almost entirely destroyed. Firefighters managed to bring the flames under control by 5:55 AM using water sources from the machinery tanks,” said Ordine.
Search operations conducted after the fire was extinguished led to the discovery of the grandmother’s body at 7:13 AM, followed by the granddaughter’s remains about 20 minutes later. It is understood that both victims were in the same room when the fire broke out and were unable to flee in time.
The cause of the fire and the total value of the losses are currently under investigation. The remains of the deceased have been handed over to the police for further action and post-mortem procedures.
