Two Arrested Following Firework Stall Explosion in Johor; Damage Estimated at RM50,000

KUALA LUMPUR – Johor police have detained two men in connection with a fire that gutted a firework stall and a food truck in the Majidee area earlier this week. The incident, which occurred on March 23, resulted in significant property damage but no loss of life.

The suspects, aged between 30 and 35, were apprehended by authorities on Wednesday following a swift investigation. According to Johor Deputy Police Chief DCP Hoo Chuan Huat, the first suspect was picked up in Kulai at 11:15 AM, while the second was caught in Kampung Melayu Majidee shortly after at 12:30 PM.

Faulty Generator Identified as Cause

Preliminary findings indicate that the blaze originated from a portable generator used by one of the suspects at his firework stall. The fire quickly spread to the inventory, triggering a series of explosions that completely destroyed the stall and a food truck parked in the immediate vicinity.

“The total estimated loss in this incident is approximately RM50,000. However, police can confirm that no deaths or injuries were reported,” DCP Hoo stated during a press conference at the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters.

Legal and Licensing Status

While investigations revealed that one of the suspects possessed a valid license to purchase and sell fireworks, the nature of the accident has led to charges under Section 286 of the Penal Code. This section pertains to negligent conduct with respect to explosive substances, which carries a potential penalty of up to six months in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

The two individuals are expected to be brought before the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court tomorrow for a remand application to facilitate further inquiries.

Surge in Firework-Related Incidents

The police also highlighted a worrying trend, noting that 66 reports involving various firework-related offenses have been lodged across the state since the beginning of Ramadan. Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution and strictly adhere to safety protocols when handling combustible materials.

The public is further advised to refrain from making speculative comments online that could interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings.
