Nine-Year-Old Autistic Boy Found Drowned in Hotel Lake in Port Dickson

SEREMBAN, March 26 — A family vacation turned into a devastating tragedy after a nine-year-old autistic boy was found drowned in a lake within a hotel compound in Lukut, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon while the boy was staying at the hotel with his family during a holiday trip. Authorities said the child was believed to have left the hotel room unnoticed, prompting a frantic search that eventually led to the discovery of his body in a nearby lake within the hotel grounds.

According to Port Dickson district police chief Superintendent Maslan Udin, the police received a report regarding the case at around 8.06 pm from a family member of the victim.

Initial investigations revealed that the boy had been in the hotel room earlier in the afternoon before his family realised that he was missing at approximately 3.30 pm. Concerned about his sudden disappearance, family members immediately began searching the surrounding areas of the hotel.

Hotel employees also joined the search effort as the situation quickly became urgent. Staff members combed through various parts of the hotel compound, including recreational areas, corridors, and outdoor spaces, hoping to locate the missing child as quickly as possible.

As the search continued, attention eventually turned to a lake located within the hotel compound, an area that can appear attractive to children due to its open space and proximity to walking paths. Tragically, the boy’s body was later discovered in the water.

Emergency responders were immediately alerted, and the child was pulled from the lake before being transported to Port Dickson Hospital. However, medical personnel later confirmed that the boy had already passed away.

A post-mortem examination conducted at the hospital’s forensic department confirmed that the cause of death was drowning. Police subsequently classified the incident as a sudden death case, stating that no criminal elements had been identified during the preliminary investigation.

The tragic incident has deeply shocked the local community and highlights the risks associated with open water features commonly found in hotels and resort properties.

Port Dickson is one of Malaysia’s most popular coastal tourist destinations, attracting thousands of local and international visitors each year due to its beaches, resorts, and recreational attractions. Many hotels in the area offer lakes, pools, and landscaped water features as part of their facilities, which can pose safety risks if not closely supervised.

Experts in child safety say that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may face unique challenges when navigating unfamiliar environments. Some autistic children may wander away from caregivers without warning, a behavior sometimes referred to as “elopement,” which can place them in dangerous situations, especially near bodies of water.

Studies have shown that drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death among children with autism, partly due to their attraction to water and difficulties in communicating distress or danger.

Following the incident, safety advocates have once again urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, particularly when staying in unfamiliar environments such as hotels, resorts, or holiday accommodations.

Parents traveling with children—especially those with special needs—are encouraged to take additional precautions, including ensuring doors and windows are secured, maintaining constant supervision, and familiarising themselves with the layout of the property upon arrival.

Hotels and resort operators are also being encouraged to strengthen safety measures around lakes, swimming pools, and other water features. These measures may include installing secure barriers, warning signage, improved lighting, and surveillance systems to reduce the risk of similar tragedies.

Community members and child safety organisations have expressed condolences to the family of the victim, emphasising the importance of raising awareness about safety measures that could help prevent future incidents.

Authorities said investigations into the case are ongoing, although at present it remains classified as a non-criminal sudden death.

The tragic loss serves as a painful reminder of how quickly accidents can occur, particularly when young children are involved, and underscores the importance of vigilance, awareness, and safety measures in public and recreational spaces.
