Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Forces Evacuation of 94 Passengers

KUALA LUMPUR,May, 2026 – Health authorities have confirmed that 94 passengers and crew members have been safely evacuated following a hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship, prompting a coordinated international medical response across multiple countries.

The evacuation operation took place after several suspected and confirmed infections were detected onboard the vessel while it was stationed near Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain, leading to urgent intervention by European health agencies and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Officials stated that passengers were transferred in stages, with medical screening conducted before boarding evacuation flights to ensure safe repatriation and reduce further health risks.

International Coordination Leads Large-Scale Evacuation

The evacuation effort involved cooperation between Spain, the Netherlands, and other European health authorities, alongside cruise operators and international health organisations.

Some passengers were flown to their home countries for further monitoring, while others were placed under medical observation depending on their exposure level and health condition.

Authorities confirmed that additional evacuation flights were arranged to clear remaining passengers still onboard, as part of a phased response strategy to fully manage the outbreak situation.

What Is Hantavirus and Why It Is Serious

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially severe infectious disease typically transmitted through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, urine, or saliva. In certain rare strains, human-to-human transmission has been observed under specific conditions.

Symptoms can include:

  • Fever and fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Severe respiratory complications in advanced cases

While outbreaks are uncommon, hantavirus infections can be serious and sometimes fatal, prompting immediate containment measures when detected in confined environments such as ships or remote locations.

Cruise Ship Placed Under Containment Measures

Following the outbreak, the cruise ship was placed under strict containment protocols, with health teams deployed onboard to carry out:

  • Full medical screening of passengers and crew
  • Environmental decontamination procedures
  • Contact tracing and exposure mapping
  • Isolation of suspected cases

Authorities are also investigating the possible origin of the outbreak, including earlier port stops and environmental exposure risks during the ship’s voyage.

WHO: Global Risk Still Considered Low

Despite the seriousness of the situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the overall risk to the general public remains low, as the virus does not spread easily in typical community settings.

However, health officials emphasise that close-contact environments such as cruise ships require rapid containment due to higher transmission risks in confined spaces.

Global Monitoring and Passenger Tracking Continues

Health agencies across multiple countries are continuing to monitor evacuated passengers, with some placed under quarantine or extended observation depending on exposure risk.

Authorities are also tracking individuals who disembarked at earlier stops during the voyage to ensure that any potential secondary cases are identified quickly.

Containment Efforts Ongoing

As evacuation operations near completion, attention is now focused on full containment of the outbreak and prevention of further spread.

Experts say the situation highlights the importance of early detection systems and international coordination in managing infectious disease outbreaks in high-risk environments such as cruise travel.

Further updates are expected as health authorities complete investigations and finalize monitoring of all affected passengers.
