Xiaomi YU7 GT Breaks Nürburgring SUV Lap Record With 7:34.931 Time

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY, 2026 — Xiaomi has made another major statement in the global electric vehicle market after its upcoming YU7 GT set a new SUV lap record at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife.

The high-performance electric SUV completed the 20.8 km Nordschleife circuit in 7 minutes 34.931 seconds, making it the fastest SUV around the track based on the reported lap time. The record run placed the Xiaomi YU7 GT ahead of the previous benchmark holder, the Audi RS Q8 Performance, by about 1.8 seconds.

According to Paul Tan’s Automotive News, the lap was driven by Xiaomi chief test driver and head of vehicle dynamics Ren Zhoucan. Xiaomi said Ren became the first Chinese driver to receive official Nürburgring lap-record certification connected to the programme.

The achievement strengthens Xiaomi’s growing reputation as a serious player in the performance EV segment. The company previously drew global attention with the SU7 Ultra, and the YU7 GT now extends that performance focus into the SUV category.

The Xiaomi YU7 GT is expected to deliver up to 1,003 PS, or about 738 kW, and a claimed 705 km CLTC electric driving range. Paul Tan noted that the CLTC figure is based on China’s more optimistic test cycle, with real-world or WLTP-equivalent range likely to be lower.

The SUV is believed to use a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup instead of the SU7 Ultra’s more powerful triple-motor configuration. Reports from China EV sources list the powertrain at around 990 hp, with a 288 kW front motor and 450 kW rear motor, giving the YU7 GT a top speed of up to 300 km/h.

Despite being a tall and heavy electric SUV, the YU7 GT has been developed with serious track hardware. The model is reported to feature 295 mm wide rear tyres, Akebono carbon-ceramic brakes, six-piston front callipers and four-piston rear callipers.

Xiaomi also fitted the Nürburgring test vehicle with a Track Package, although full details of the package have not yet been revealed. The package is expected to be explained more clearly when the model is officially launched in China.

Visually, the YU7 GT receives a more aggressive design than the standard YU7. The performance SUV features larger front air intakes, wider wheel arch extensions, a more prominent tailgate spoiler, a large rear diffuser and 21-inch alloy wheels with slim Y-shaped spokes.

Inside, the YU7 GT keeps the premium digital-focused cabin of the standard YU7 but adds sportier details. These include a carbon-fibre steering wheel, stronger seat bolstering, red-and-black part-Alcantara trim and GT badging across the cabin. The SUV also features a 16.1-inch infotainment touchscreen and a wide projection-style display layout.

The model is scheduled to launch in China on May 21, with display vehicles already reported to be available in Xiaomi stores across multiple Chinese cities. CnEVPost reported that the YU7 GT is expected to be positioned as a high-performance version of Xiaomi’s electric SUV lineup.

The record is important because Nürburgring lap times remain a powerful marketing benchmark for performance cars. For Xiaomi, beating established premium performance SUVs gives the brand stronger credibility as it moves beyond smartphones and consumer electronics into the competitive EV market.

The YU7 GT also shows how quickly Chinese EV brands are moving into high-performance territory. Rather than focusing only on affordability and range, Xiaomi is using speed, handling, software integration and track validation to compete with brands such as Audi, Porsche, Tesla and other premium automakers.

For the global EV market, the YU7 GT’s achievement signals a wider shift. Chinese automakers are no longer only competing in mass-market electric vehicles; they are increasingly targeting the premium and performance segments that were once dominated by European and American manufacturers.

However, full production specifications, pricing and international availability have yet to be confirmed. More details are expected during the official China launch, including whether the Track Package will be offered to customers and how closely the production version will match the Nürburgring record-setting vehicle.

Xiaomi YU7 GT has set a new Nürburgring Nordschleife SUV lap record with a time of 7:34.931. The 1,003 PS electric performance SUV beats the Audi RS Q8 Performance and will officially launch in China on May 21.
