Malaysian Young Pair Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin Stun World No. 1 Chinese Duo in Singapore Open Shocker

Kuala Lumpur — Malaysia’s newly formed mixed doubles pair, Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin, delivered one of the biggest upsets of the year by defeating China’s world No. 1 pair Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping in the first round of the Singapore Open on Tuesday (May 26, 2026).

The unseeded Malaysian duo needed just 43 minutes to overcome the top seeds with a score of 23-21, 21-16 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. This marks only their second international tournament together, following a first-round exit at the recent Malaysian Masters.

Jimmy, who recently paired up with Su Yin after parting ways with his previous partner Lai Pei Jing, expressed his delight after the impressive victory.

“I’m so happy that we came back stronger here,” said Jimmy. “It was all about being patient today and I’m glad we managed to beat the world No. 1 pair.”

The win sends Jimmy-Su Yin into the second round, where they will face Taiwan’s Yang Po-hsuan and Hu Ling-fang for a spot in the quarter-finals.

This result is seen as a major boost for the Malaysian pair, who joined forces after Su Yin was left without a partner following Hoo Pang Ron’s departure from the national setup. Their shock victory over the reigning world No. 1 highlights the potential of this new partnership early on.

The Singapore Open continues to deliver surprises in the mixed doubles category, with this Malaysian upset standing out as one of the tournament’s biggest talking points so far.
