Bersatu Assemblyman Remains In Terengganu Exco Despite PAS Ending Political Cooperation, Says Ahmad Samsuri

KUALA LUMPUR,June,2026 – Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has confirmed that there will be no reshuffle in the state executive council despite PAS’ decision to end political cooperation with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, better known as Bersatu.

Ahmad Samsuri said the composition of the Terengganu state administration remains unchanged, including the position of Bersatu assemblyman Datuk Razali Idris, who currently serves as a member of the state executive council.

Speaking briefly to the media after attending a Terengganu Exco meeting at a hotel in the capital, Ahmad Samsuri said the state government line-up remains the same. When asked about the matter, he replied, “Still the same. That’s all,” and did not provide further comment.

His statement effectively answers questions surrounding Razali’s position in the Terengganu government following PAS’ latest move to terminate political cooperation with Bersatu at the national party level. Razali is also the Terengganu Bersatu leadership body chief, making his position closely watched after the announcement.

The issue gained attention after PAS’ special central working committee meeting decided to immediately end its political cooperation with Bersatu. PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang was reported as saying the decision followed the party’s acceptance of the Majlis Syura Ulama resolution dated June 2, which examined matters of principle, religious considerations and public interest in political cooperation based on the concept of Muslim unity.

Despite the political split between PAS and Bersatu, the Terengganu state administration appears set to continue operating without immediate changes. Ahmad Samsuri’s response suggests that state governance and executive responsibilities will remain stable for now, even as the wider political relationship between the two parties changes.

The development is significant because Terengganu is one of the key states under PAS leadership, and Bersatu still holds representation in the state legislative assembly. Any change in the state executive council would have carried political implications for the balance of cooperation within the state government.

During the Terengganu state election in August 2023, Bersatu won five state seats: Hulu Besut, Permaisuri, Seberang Takir, Telemong and Kijal. This presence gave Bersatu a notable role in the state political landscape, despite PAS being the dominant force in the state government.

The decision to keep the Exco line-up unchanged may be seen as an effort to maintain administrative continuity while PAS and Bersatu manage the fallout from their political separation. It also indicates that the immediate impact of PAS’ decision may not automatically affect Bersatu representatives serving in PAS-led state administrations.

At the same time, the issue remains politically sensitive because PAS and Bersatu had previously worked together under the broader opposition coalition framework. The latest decision raises questions over how cooperation will continue in states, assemblies and local political structures where both parties still have elected representatives.

For now, Ahmad Samsuri’s position is clear: the Terengganu Exco remains unchanged, and Bersatu’s representative in the state government continues to hold his post. However, further developments may depend on future decisions by PAS, Bersatu and the wider political leadership within Perikatan Nasional.
