Hamzah Zainudin Returns as Opposition Leader, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Confirms

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2026 — Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has confirmed that Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has officially returned to the position of Leader of the Opposition, marking another shift in Malaysia’s parliamentary opposition leadership.

Johari made the confirmation in the Dewan Rakyat, saying that Hamzah’s return to the post took effect from June 18, 2026. Hamzah, who is the Member of Parliament for Larut, will once again lead the opposition bloc in Parliament.

“Effective from June 18, 2026, YB Larut has returned to the position of Leader of the Opposition,” Johari was quoted as saying in the Dewan Rakyat.

The confirmation comes after several weeks of uncertainty over the opposition leadership position. Hamzah had previously served as Opposition Leader until May 20, before Kemaman MP Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar held the post from May 21 to June 10.

Johari also congratulated Hamzah on his return and thanked Ahmad Samsuri for his service during his brief tenure as Opposition Leader.

The latest development also affects the seating arrangement in the Dewan Rakyat. Hamzah will remain seated in the front row of the opposition bloc, next to Ahmad Samsuri, who is also the Perikatan Nasional chairman.

The confirmation follows an earlier report that Johari had received a notification letter affirming Hamzah as Opposition Leader. At the time, the Speaker said he had received the letter confirming Hamzah’s position, along with several changes to MPs’ seating arrangements.

Hamzah’s position had become the subject of political attention after he was expelled from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia in February, which led to uncertainty over his role as Opposition Leader. Perikatan Nasional later named Ahmad Samsuri as his replacement, before PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang announced on June 13 that Hamzah would return to the post.

The return of Hamzah is significant because the Opposition Leader plays a central role in parliamentary debates, government scrutiny and coordination among opposition MPs. The position is especially important during major sittings involving policy debates, government bills and national issues.

As Opposition Leader, Hamzah is expected to lead the opposition’s response to government policies, raise questions on national governance and coordinate parliamentary strategy among opposition lawmakers.

The development also comes at the start of the Second Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 15th Parliament, which runs from June 22 to July 16.

This sitting is expected to be closely watched because it comes amid several major political developments, including upcoming state election preparations, coalition positioning and national policy debates.

Hamzah’s return may also help stabilise the opposition bloc’s leadership structure after a period of internal changes. His placement next to Ahmad Samsuri in the front row could indicate that both figures will continue to play important roles in the opposition’s parliamentary strategy.

For Perikatan Nasional, the confirmation provides clarity before the latest Dewan Rakyat sitting begins. It allows the coalition to move forward with a more defined parliamentary leadership arrangement.

The brief period involving Ahmad Samsuri as Opposition Leader also shows the complexity of opposition politics following changes within party membership and coalition alignment.

Although Ahmad Samsuri’s tenure was short, Johari’s statement thanking him for his service suggests that the transition has now been formally recognised within the Dewan Rakyat.

The leadership change is also likely to attract attention from political observers because Hamzah remains a senior opposition figure with experience in Parliament and government administration.

His return gives the opposition a familiar face in the role, especially during debates where the government is expected to face questions on governance, economy, security, public spending and political reform.

The confirmation also removes uncertainty over the official status of the Opposition Leader in the Dewan Rakyat. With the Speaker’s announcement, Hamzah’s return is now part of the formal parliamentary record.

Hamzah Zainudin’s return as Opposition Leader marks a key update in Malaysia’s parliamentary politics. It provides clarity on the opposition’s leadership arrangement and sets the tone for the current Dewan Rakyat sitting.

The development is suitable for Update News because it involves a current parliamentary confirmation, a leadership change in the opposition bloc and the latest political developments in Malaysia’s Dewan Rakyat.
