Hamas Disbands Gaza Government Body To Open Path For Transitional Committee

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Hamas has announced the dissolution of the governing body that has administered Gaza for nearly two decades, opening the way for a technocratic transition committee to take over civilian administration in the war-hit territory. The move was confirmed on Monday, July 6, 2026, and is seen as a major political shift in Gaza’s postwar governance process.

The decision is intended to allow the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, also known as NCAG, to assume responsibility for day-to-day civilian affairs. The committee is expected to oversee public services and administrative functions as part of wider efforts to reorganise Gaza’s governance structure.

According to reports, Mohammed al-Farra, the head of Hamas’ Government Emergency Committee, has submitted his resignation. Hamas also stated that the committee would be dissolved to facilitate the administrative and governmental transition to NCAG.

Hamas said it hopes the NCAG will be able to enter Gaza soon and affirmed its readiness to hand over governmental responsibilities to the committee. The dissolution of the 15-member Hamas body is being described as a step toward transferring civilian rule to a technocratic administration.

The NCAG is reportedly led by Palestinian technocrat Ali Shaath and has been based in Cairo for months. However, its ability to operate inside Gaza remains uncertain, as reports say the committee has faced obstacles entering the territory due to Israeli objections.

Hamas has governed Gaza since 2007, after taking control of the territory from rival Palestinian faction Fatah. The latest announcement therefore marks one of the most significant changes to Gaza’s political structure since Hamas began ruling the enclave.

Despite the announcement, several key issues remain unresolved. One of the biggest questions is whether Hamas will agree to disarm, which remains a central demand in discussions involving Israel, the United States and international mediators.

The Associated Press reported that the move is aligned with a US-brokered ceasefire framework, but the announcement did not address Hamas’ military role or the question of international security control in Gaza. This makes the political transition complex, even if civilian governance is formally transferred.

Israel has reacted cautiously to the development. Israeli officials and analysts have questioned whether the move represents a real transfer of authority or merely a symbolic gesture, especially as long as the weapons issue remains unsettled.

For Gaza residents, the transition could have major implications for humanitarian aid, public services and reconstruction. After months of conflict and destruction, the success of any new administrative committee will depend on access, security arrangements, funding and international recognition.

The United Nations has also welcomed Hamas’ decision to support a civilian administrative transition through the dissolution of its Gaza emergency governing committee, according to a separate Metro TV report. The UN viewed the move as potentially supporting the implementation of the ceasefire process in Gaza.
