Anwar’s Anti-Corruption Image Seen As Key Factor In Winning Johor Voter Support

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s firm image in fighting corruption and the so-called “sakau” culture is seen as one of the key factors that could influence voter support in the Johor state election. According to Sinar Harian, analysts believe Anwar’s anti-corruption message, combined with efforts to strengthen the people’s economy, may help shape public confidence toward the Madani government.

Universiti Sains Malaysia senior lecturer Dr Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim said Johor voters now have the opportunity to assess the performance of the Madani administration, especially in areas involving integrity, governance and economic development. She noted that the government’s continued action against corruption and abuse of power has helped reinforce public confidence in Anwar’s leadership.

Noor Fareen said many voters are tired of corruption involving political leaders and want a government that shows clear commitment to protecting public interest. She added that the Madani government has remained consistent in addressing corruption, particularly among civil servants and stakeholders.

Anwar recently warned that the era of “sakau” culture and crony-based politics had ended, while stressing that the government’s priority is to clean up the country’s administrative system from deeply rooted corrupt practices. He also said national resources should be used fully for the welfare of the people.

In the context of the Johor state election, Noor Fareen said voters are no longer judging political parties based only on campaign rhetoric. Instead, they are looking at the actual benefits delivered through government policies and implementation.

She added that access to technology and mass media has made voters more capable of evaluating government performance independently. This means political parties need to present clear achievements, practical policies and credible leadership rather than relying only on slogans.

Candidate selection is also expected to play an important role in shaping voter support. Noor Fareen said candidates with strong credibility, clean reputations and proven track records are more likely to gain public trust, especially as corruption remains a serious concern among voters.

At the same time, she said Anwar and the government must continue strengthening efforts to address cost of living issues, job opportunities and student dropout concerns. She also highlighted the need to deal with undocumented migrant issues alongside the broader anti-corruption agenda.

The analyst also stressed that party machinery must work harder to ensure the government’s message reaches voters effectively. She said the final outcome will depend on how wisely Johor voters assess the choices offered to them during the election.
