HSR Type 859 Revives Audi Sport Quattro Spirit With 600HP Carbon-Fibre Restomod

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – HSR Manufaktur has introduced the Type 859, a modern restomod project inspired by the legendary Audi Sport Quattro, one of the most iconic rally cars from the Group B era. The model was highlighted in a recent Instagram post, which described the Type 859 as a carbon-fibre tribute to the 1984 Audi Sport Quattro with a 500 to 600 horsepower upgraded 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine.

The Type 859 is not a simple recreation of the original Sport Quattro. According to Car and Driver, HSR starts with a period-correct Audi Coupe B2 donor chassis, shortens the body, adjusts the wheelbase and reinforces the structure with an integrated roll cage before fitting carbon-fibre panels to reduce weight.

Under the hood, the Type 859 uses Audi’s turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder DAZA engine, which is rebuilt with forged internals and motorsport-focused components. The engine is mounted longitudinally and is designed to deliver selectable power output between 500 and 600 horsepower.

Performance hardware remains a major part of the project’s identity. The engine is paired with a reinforced six-speed manual transmission, a Torsen centre differential and full-time all-wheel drive with a rear-biased setup. Top Gear also reported that the car features a mechanical limited-slip differential at the rear axle, active exhaust, carbon ceramic brakes, launch control and rev matching.

Visually, the Type 859 keeps a strong connection to the original Sport Quattro’s boxy rally character. Its design includes wide wheel arches, aggressive front bodywork, rally-style details and a large rear wing, while using modern carbon-fibre construction to give the car a lighter and more contemporary presence.

HSR plans to build only 84 examples of the Type 859, a number chosen as a tribute to 1984, the year linked to Audi’s World Rally Championship success. Pricing starts from around €500,000 before tax, or about US$570,000 based on current exchange estimates.

However, the Type 859 remains an exclusive and highly specialised project rather than a mass-production car. Top Gear noted that the images released so far are renders and that HSR is still working on the first physical prototype.

Despite that, the project has already drawn interest from collectors. HSR told Top Gear that it had received signed letters of intent and direct inquiries from several countries, with the strongest demand coming from the United States, Germany and Switzerland.
