KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – The proposed move would allow developers, cybersecurity researchers and members of the public to inspect the platform’s code, study how its systems function and contribute possible improvements.
Musk said opening the complete codebase could make X more transparent than competing social media platforms. Public access would also give independent experts an opportunity to examine the platform’s technical structure and identify areas that may require improvement.
However, the release will not take place immediately. X is currently conducting a comprehensive review of its source code to identify potential security vulnerabilities and critical weaknesses.
The company intends to make the code publicly available only after the identified vulnerabilities have been addressed. This precaution is considered essential because exposing a platform’s complete codebase before resolving serious security flaws could provide malicious actors with information that might be exploited.
No specific date has been announced for the planned release. The timing will depend on the completion of the security assessment and the platform’s ability to address the vulnerabilities discovered during the review.
The announcement expands on Musk’s earlier efforts to make parts of X’s technology more transparent. The platform previously opened a portion of its recommendation algorithm to the global developer community, prompting wider discussion about algorithmic transparency, content distribution and user-data privacy.
Making the entire codebase open source would represent a much broader step. It could allow researchers to evaluate how X manages content, user interactions, platform performance and other technical operations, although the final scope of the public release has not yet been detailed.
