Israel and Jordan Intercept Iranian Missiles Near Aqaba as Tensions Escalate

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Israeli and Jordanian forces intercepted Iranian missiles heading towards Aqaba in southern Jordan on Sunday, July 19, 2026, as escalating regional hostilities raised concerns about a broader military confrontation.

The Israeli military said it detected a missile launched from Iran towards Aqaba shortly before the interception. Residents in nearby areas were warned that falling debris could potentially reach Israeli territory, particularly around the southern city of Eilat.

Responding to reports of explosions near Eilat, an Israeli military spokesperson said Israeli and Jordanian forces had intercepted a projectile. Jordan’s military separately reported shooting down three Iranian missiles targeting the kingdom, while a fourth landed in an isolated area.

Air-raid sirens were activated in Jordan’s capital, Amman, and several other parts of the country during the incident. No immediate casualties were reported from the interceptions.

The Israeli military later said additional interceptor missiles were launched towards debris from the Iranian projectile to reduce the risk of fragments falling inside Israel. Interceptor fragments were subsequently found in an open area near Eilat, but authorities reported no injuries or property damage.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that his country would respond strongly if Iranian missiles were launched directly at Israeli territory. He said Israel remained prepared for both defensive and offensive action against Tehran should the security situation deteriorate further.

The incident also caused uncertainty surrounding transport operations in Aqaba. Jordan’s government denied reports that authorities had ordered the evacuation of the city’s airport or seaport, maintaining that both facilities continued operating normally.

The denial followed an announcement by the United States embassy that some personnel had been evacuated because of what it described as a credible security threat. Jordanian government spokesperson Mohammad al-Momani said no official evacuation order had been issued for Aqaba’s airport or port.

The latest interceptions underline Jordan’s increasingly difficult position as missiles and drones cross regional airspace during the confrontation involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Jordan has repeatedly said it will defend its territory against projectiles that threaten its population and national security.
