KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected the new chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, widely known as ECOWAS.
West African leaders unanimously selected Faye during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, on Sunday.
The appointment places the Senegalese president at the head of one of Africa’s most prominent regional organisations, which promotes political coordination and economic cooperation among West African countries.
Faye succeeds Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio, who previously held the ECOWAS chairmanship. The leadership transition was confirmed during the regional summit attended by heads of state and government.
As the new chairman, Faye is expected to lead efforts to strengthen regional integration and promote closer cooperation among ECOWAS countries.
Peace and security are also expected to form an important part of his leadership agenda as the regional bloc seeks to improve coordination and stability across West Africa.
Faye will also be responsible for encouraging stronger economic cooperation between member countries. Closer regional collaboration is viewed as important for supporting development and addressing economic challenges shared by West African nations.
His unanimous election reflects the support of the regional leaders who participated in the summit and gives him a mandate to guide the organisation’s priorities during his tenure.
Under Faye’s leadership, ECOWAS is expected to continue focusing on regional integration, economic collaboration, peace and security while encouraging stronger relations among its members.
