Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 6,125

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 – The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela in late June has increased to 6,125, according to an update issued by a senior government official.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced the latest figures on Monday as emergency teams continued rescue, damage-assessment and debris-removal operations across the South American country.

Rodriguez said emergency personnel had successfully rescued 6,642 people following the disaster.

A total of 60,992 people had also received treatment at hospitals nationwide, highlighting the extensive human impact caused by the two major earthquakes.

Authorities have inspected more than 40,000 homes as part of efforts to determine whether affected buildings remain safe for residents.

Of the properties assessed, 25,325 were declared safe for occupation, while 9,866 were placed under restricted-use conditions. Another 6,433 homes were classified as high risk.

The housing damage has displaced many families and created an urgent need for longer-term accommodation.

The government has so far handed over 287 newly built homes to families who lost their residences in the disaster.

Recovery teams are also continuing large-scale debris removal in areas affected by collapsed buildings and damaged infrastructure.

More than 382,230 tonnes of debris have been collected, representing about 16.5% of the total amount of waste estimated to have been generated by the earthquakes.

The two earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on June 24.

The powerful tremors caused widespread destruction and prompted authorities to declare a nationwide state of emergency.
