Powerful 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Indonesia, Killing at Least Five as Tsunami Warning Ends

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Flores, Indonesia, early Saturday, August 15, killing at least five people and damaging homes and other buildings across parts of East Nusa Tenggara.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) located the earthquake about 30 kilometres northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo, at a depth of approximately 15 kilometres. The agency initially issued tsunami alerts for several areas in East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi.

Preliminary reports indicated two deaths in Sikka Regency and three in Manggarai Regency. Power outages and communication disruptions in several areas complicated efforts to collect information on damage and casualties.

Strong shaking caused residents to flee buildings, while several hospitals evacuated patients as a precaution. Medical staff moved beds, oxygen cylinders and other equipment outdoors to maintain emergency treatment services.

Damage was also reported at buildings in Sikka and surrounding areas. At a seminary in Flores, students and religious workers fled after part of an assembly hall roof collapsed, while at least one priest reportedly suffered a broken leg after jumping from a building.

BMKG later confirmed that small tsunami waves were detected at several locations, including about 0.94 metres at Maurole-Ende, 0.54 metres at Bulukumba and 0.38 metres at Pelabuhan Kewapante-Sikka. The agency subsequently declared the tsunami threat over at 7.31am Western Indonesian Time.

The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, while authorities continued assessing damage and conducting search-and-rescue operations in affected communities.

Indonesia lies along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, making the country particularly vulnerable to major earthquakes and volcanic activity. Saturday’s earthquake once again prompted rapid evacuations in coastal communities across eastern Indonesia.
