KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is on a two-day working visit to Brunei on August 21 and 22 to attend the 27th Annual Leaders’ Consultation (ALC-27) between Malaysia and Brunei.
The consultation represents the highest-level bilateral mechanism between the two countries and provides an opportunity for Anwar and the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, to review the progress of Malaysia-Brunei relations and ongoing cooperation.
Malaysia’s High Commissioner to Brunei, Datuk Mohd Aini Atan, said both leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest. Malaysia and Brunei have maintained close diplomatic ties since 1984 and remain key partners within ASEAN.
One of the major outcomes expected from the visit is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on disaster management cooperation between the relevant ministers from both countries.
Anwar is accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Ahead of ALC-27, Mohamad Hasan is also set to jointly chair the 27th Malaysia-Brunei Exchange of Letters Implementation Meeting with Brunei’s Second Minister of Foreign Affairs, Datuk Seri Setia Erywan Mohd Yusof. The meeting will assess progress on agreements reached during the previous consultation in Putrajaya.
Economic ties remain an important part of the relationship. Bilateral trade reached RM5.86 billion in 2025, while trade between January and June 2026 stood at RM2.38 billion. Malaysia exported RM4.20 billion worth of goods to Brunei in 2025 and imported RM1.66 billion.
