KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Bangladesh’s parliament has elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the country’s next president, filling the vacancy left by Mohammed Shahabuddin, who stepped down before completing his term.
Alamgir, 78, a senior figure in the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), won the presidential vote by 255 votes to 88. He defeated Oli Ahmed, 84, a retired army colonel and chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party who was backed by an 11-party opposition alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami.
Ahead of the vote, Alamgir said he wanted Bangladesh to become a more prosperous and welfare-oriented country, with greater attention given to marginalised communities, workers and low-income households.
His election comes after the BNP returned to power following the February 12 general election, securing a two-thirds parliamentary majority and installing Tarique Rahman as prime minister. The political shift followed the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government after mass protests in 2024.
Former president Mohammed Shahabuddin, 76, resigned on July 24, two years before the scheduled end of his term, citing serious health concerns. Bangladesh’s constitution requires a replacement president to be elected within 90 days of a vacancy.
Although Bangladesh’s presidency is largely ceremonial, the president serves as head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, giving the position important constitutional significance.
Alamgir has been involved in politics for decades and became one of the BNP’s most prominent national figures during Sheikh Hasina’s rule. He has previously held several government posts, including portfolios covering local government, agriculture, aviation and tourism.
