Teacher and Six-Year-Old Son Killed After MPV Plunges Into Ravine in Rompin

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — A teacher and her six-year-old son were killed in a road accident after the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) carrying their family plunged into a ravine at KM149.9 of Jalan Kuantan-Seremban in Rompin, Pahang, on Friday night.

Rompin District Police Chief Supt Sharif Shai Sharif Mondoi identified the victims as Kartinie Ngatenan, 46, and her son, Muhammad Akif Mohd Azmi, six. Both were pronounced dead at the scene following the crash, which occurred at about 9.30pm.

Preliminary investigations found that the MPV was being driven by Kartinie’s 47-year-old husband.

The family was travelling from Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, towards Felda Keratong in Rompin when the accident occurred.

According to police, the vehicle is believed to have struck a piece of wood on the road upon reaching the location.

The impact allegedly caused the driver to lose control of the MPV before it veered off the road and plunged into a ravine on the right-hand side.

Kartinie and Muhammad Akif suffered fatal injuries and died at the accident scene.

The driver survived but sustained head injuries and was taken to Hospital Muadzam Shah for treatment.

Police did not provide further details on his condition in the initial statement.

Police are continuing investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident, including the sequence of events that caused the vehicle to leave the road.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers driving that results in death.

The initial police findings regarding the piece of wood on the roadway remain part of the investigation and should not be treated as a final determination of responsibility.

The tragedy highlights the potential danger posed by unexpected objects or debris on highways, particularly during night-time journeys when visibility may be reduced.

Motorists are generally advised to remain alert to road conditions, maintain a safe speed and keep sufficient distance to respond to unexpected hazards.

For the family involved, however, the journey to Rompin ended in tragedy with the loss of a mother and her young son.

Authorities are expected to continue their investigation before determining the complete cause of the fatal crash.
