KUALA LUMPUR – A massive pre-dawn fire tore through a cluster of homes in Tanjung Tokong on Tuesday morning, destroying four single-storey squatter houses and leaving 23 residents—including several young children—homeless and in a state of shock.
The Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) was alerted to the emergency at 3:14 AM. Within seven minutes, the first team of first responders from the Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene, where they were met with towering flames and thick smoke visible from the main road.
According to a spokesperson for the department, the fire spread rapidly due to the close proximity and flammable nature of the wooden structures. Each of the four affected houses measured between 55 and 75 square metres.
“Our personnel worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from leaping to adjacent dwellings in the densely populated area,” the spokesperson said. “Through the combined efforts of the Bagan Jermal station and supporting units from the Jalan Perak and Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Stations, the fire was successfully brought under control by 3:42 AM.”
The operation continued for several hours to ensure no embers remained. The site was officially declared safe and the operation concluded at approximately 6:00 AM.
Despite the total destruction of the properties and a Honda EX5 motorcycle, fire officials confirmed there were no fatalities or injuries. The 23 victims—comprising 10 men, six women, and seven children—consisted of both Malay and Rohingya families. Many reported being woken up by the smell of smoke and the shouts of neighbors, barely having enough time to flee with only the clothes on their backs.
One victim described the scene as chaotic, noting that the fire moved so quickly that there was no opportunity to save personal documents, electronics, or household valuables.
While the immediate danger has passed, the affected families now face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives from scratch. Local community leaders and welfare organizations are expected to coordinate temporary housing and essential supplies for the displaced residents.
The JBPM forensics unit is currently on-site conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. An official estimate of the total financial losses incurred is also pending.
