Indonesia’s Export Centralization Rattles Malaysian Planters

Kuala Lumpur, 25 May 2026 – Indonesia’s move to centralise the export of key commodities such as crude palm oil, thermal coal, and ferroalloys through a single state-controlled entity has raised serious concerns among Malaysian plantation companies with large operations in the country.

According to reports, President Prabowo Subianto has announced the formation of a new entity called Danantara Sumberdaya Indonesia, which will be overseen by the country’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara. This entity will serve as the sole exporter for these strategic commodities during a transition period from 1 June to 31 August 2026.

Jakarta’s Main Objectives

The Indonesian government stated that the move aims to:

  • Prevent under-invoicing and price manipulation
  • Increase government revenue
  • Strengthen control over the pricing of strategic commodities

Indonesia is the world’s largest exporter of crude palm oil (CPO) and thermal coal.

Impact on Malaysian Companies

Analysts predict that major Malaysian plantation firms such as Sime Darby, IOI Corporation, KLK, and FELDA, which have extensive operations in Indonesia, will be significantly affected. They will now need to adapt to the new centralised export system tightly controlled by the Indonesian government.

Key challenges expected include:

  • Slower approval and logistics processes
  • Potential reduction in price competitiveness
  • Risk of supply disruptions to international buyers
  • Pressure on profit margins from Indonesian operations

Opportunities for Malaysia?

Despite the challenges, some analysts see potential long-term opportunities for Malaysia. Any disruption in Indonesian supply could allow Malaysia — the world’s second-largest palm oil producer — to fill market gaps, particularly in refined palm oil and downstream products.

Malaysia’s Minister of Plantation and Commodities is expected to closely monitor the situation and may initiate discussions with Indonesian authorities to protect Malaysian investors’ interests.

This latest move reflects a growing trend of resource nationalism under President Prabowo’s administration, as Indonesia seeks to gain greater economic benefits from its natural wealth.
