Over 400 Detained After Violence Erupts During PSG Champions League Title Celebrations

Kuala Lumpur — Violence broke out in Paris and several parts of France after thousands of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) fans celebrated the club’s dramatic UEFA Champions League final victory against Arsenal in Budapest, Hungary.

France’s Interior Ministry reported that 416 people were arrested nationwide, including 283 in Paris. Seven police officers were injured, while several vehicles and business premises were damaged during the unrest.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the incidents as “completely unacceptable.” He said authorities had deployed 22,000 police officers across France — including 8,000 in Paris — to manage the celebrations following last year’s negative experience.

“Despite a very robust security system in place, we will not tolerate any acts of violence,” he stated.

The chaos started when supporters stormed the Paris ring road (périphérique), blocking traffic and launching flares and fireworks. Around 20,000 people gathered on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, while outside Parc des Princes stadium, between 4,000 and 5,000 fans threw projectiles at police. Some attempted to force their way into the stadium and tried to build barricades using rental bicycles, but police quickly stopped them.

Six vehicles, two business premises (a bakery and a restaurant near Parc des Princes), and a bus shelter were damaged. Police seized 24 flares and around 100 fireworks. Several metro stations were closed, and tram and bus services were suspended in affected areas to prevent further disorder.

Far-right politician Marine Le Pen criticised the events on platform X, saying: “Only in France does a football club victory trigger riots.”

PSG won their first-ever UEFA Champions League title after defeating Arsenal in a dramatic penalty shootout. The celebrations coincided with a busy night in the French capital, which also hosted a concert by singer Aya Nakamura at Stade de France, a performance by rapper Damso at La Defense Arena, and the ongoing French Open.

The PSG players are scheduled to hold a victory parade on Sunday afternoon at the Champs-de-Mars in front of the Eiffel Tower, where up to 100,000 fans are expected, before being received by President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.
